Poland
Sports
The most popular sport is football. In each city there are some local clubs, where young boys train to be as famous as Artur Boruc (a famous goal keeper, for whose who don’t know :)).
We are so proud of our champions that when someone wins a lot of people want to train the same kind of sport, e.g. ski jumping (Adam Malysz) or racing (Robert Kubica).
In big cites people often go to the gym, walk a lot. In our region there are a lot of lakes, that’s why in summer swimming, sailing and canoeing are very popular. Although we live in the north of Poland, we have possibilities to go skiing and skating during winter.
Children and teenagers, like everywhere in the world, like cycling and roller-skating.
Festivities or important days of the year
The most important days of the year are Catholic holidays, e.g. Christmas and Easter, mostly celebrated with families with gifts, Christmas tree and Easter eggs. Of course, New Year’s Eve and New Year are great opportunity to have a party.
In Poland we don’t celebrate birthdays as much as in other countries, instead we have name days.
St Andrews Day ( November,30th) is known for fortune - telling. Young girls pour wax through the key hole to know the future.
Social taboos
In our country there are a lot of things which are social taboos. We don’t discuss things connected with sexual preferences, politics, Jews, money. The only safe subject is the weather :), like in England….
Dress style
We have global style of dressing, but we dress in different ways depending on the situation. We have many young fashion designers known all over the world Dawid Wolinski, Maciej Zien, Ewa Minge, Gosia Baczynska etc.
Do's and don'ts
Do: spend a lot of time at home watching TV, eat fast food (young people), drink alcohol, go to church every Sunday, complain about everything.
Don’ts: don’t speak foreign languages, read books, go to the cinema.
Shopping and leisure
Shopping centers are very popular not only for shopping, but also as a meeting point for young people. We do big shopping in supermarkets on Saturday or Sunday. We do everyday shopping rather in small local shops.
Leisure: visiting friends, families, going to parties, shopping, watching TV, playing computer
A mobile phone is a very popular way of communicating, especially sending SMS.
The main curiosity of the region
Our region is called “green lungs” of Poland. Natural attractions are the main curiosity.
Ostróda - Elbląg Canal, 82 km long, the unique water system in the world because of the hydrotechnical devices being in operation since 1860.
Nicolaus Copernicus lived and worked for some time in Olsztyn and its regions. We have some mementos of him here.
Weather and climate
We are the coldest region of Poland. The climate is mild, we have about 160 rainy days, 140 frosty days, 83 days with snow cover. But sometimes we have really nice summers….
