Survival Italian

Italian is the official language of Italy, San Marino, Vatican City and one of the official languages of Switzerland. It is spoken by about 63 million people, primarily in Italy and Switzerland, but it is also well understood in Slovenia, Croatia, Monaco, Malta and Albania.

It is a Romance language descending from Vulgar Latin, the language of soldiers, settlers and merchants of the Roman Empire. Of the Romance languages, Italian is considered to be one of the closest resembling Latin in terms of vocabulary. It has always had a distinctive dialect for each city, since the Italian cities were until recently thought of as city-states.

Modern Italian was first formalized in the first years of the 14th century through the works of Dante Alighieri, who mixed southern Italian languages, especially Sicilian, with his native Tuscan in his epic poems known collectively as the Commedia. Official italian is very similar to the dialect of Tuscany, but sounds completely different from the several dialects spoken in the other regions of Italy.
