Bilateral meeting of Germany, Poland and Belgium in Geel, May/June 2007

In our project steLLLa we want to perform a video conference during the 3rd project year. This event  is part of disseminating the project and its results. But because the prerequisites and knowledge about this method are very different among the partners it is important to learn from each other how to use it, to discuss what we want, how to prepare this and to find a technical system that meets all the needs we have. This is an advanced task that we focused on during our Geel meeting at the Centre of adult education Hoger Instituut der Kempen department GPB (CVOHIKempen – GPB).

Wednesday, 30th May 2007

It took about 10 hours by car to go from Rostock at the Baltic Sea to Geel in Flanders. Together with the German Christian Schütt and Volker Gries the Polish friend from Olsztyn Magda Szpyra participated in this bilateral meeting. Our Belgish hosts very cordially welcomed their European guests.

Thursday, 31st May 2007

The main topic of our discussions in Geel during this meeting was video conferencing, how one can organize such a session, what technology and preparations are needed. Tom Segers, an experienced scientist and technician working in the Katholieke Hoogeschool Kempen (KHK) at Geel, joined us during our sessions and started with an introduction of technical issues and practical demonstrations of the video conference system at the school. The system of the school is very powerful and user friendly what enables high quality video conferencing. Unfortunately it is rather expensive too. Another tested solution, the vPointHD, based on transmission protocols of the internet was powerful as well. It may become the candidate for our video conference in the 3rd project year. A very easy and free of charge solution was prepared and demonstrated by Jan Cuypers and Lowie Nijs from the CVOHIKempen – GPB. The advantages and disadvantages were discussed and all the systems compared to each other. A highlight was to put hands on the different systems, try these and learn about these on a very practical way. During the morning the local television visited the school, made an interview and prepared a television broadcast transmission about our project. It was transmitted in the evening. In the afternoon we had a presentation by Marieke van Beylen from the KHK. She presented us the results of an European project Real Virtual Erasmus (REVE). Part of the project was the International Student Business Challenge based on video conferencing methods. It was very useful for us to learn about the manifold experiencies and to get tips for our project.
Our Belgian partner organized an academic session of the CVOHIKempen – GPB with more than 100 guests for this evening. There was a possebility to widespread the ideas of steLLLa, to get in contact with interested people, introduce our institutions and exchange experiencies. A very amazing performance was given by a young accordionist.

Friday, 1st June 2007

On Friday we started with the demonstration of another technical solution. The Centra7 software is a so-called virtual classroom used by the German partner during different learning and teaching sessions. The system was presented by Lore Ress in Germany, manager and VC specialist at the Daten + Dokumentation GmbH. There are some similarities but also differencies to video conferencing. We agreed to keep the system in mind for our planned video conference as well. Topic of our discussions on this day were the last changes at the website as well.
In the afternoon we visited the town Louvain. Who ever has seen the town hall of Louvain will never forget this impressive building. A very kind and well-informed guide showed us the town. Louvain is also well-known because of its university.
The evening was reserved for another highlight, a cooking session in the hotel school of Geel. The idea was born during the meeting in Rostock. We prepared an European menu with dishes from Poland, Belgium and Germany what was another possebility to learn about culture of the different partners. We had a lot of fun. Thank you to Jan and his friend Peter, a professional cook who helped us.

Saturday, 2nd June 2007

This morning Machteld Dirkx, a student at the CVOHIKempen – GPB joined us. We discussed the other tasks of the project, the questionaire and project evaluation. Since the last Cyprus meeting we follow the idea to produce a flyer and poster for the project steLLLa as well. Manuella Borghs had prepared some good ideas how to start with these activities. It also was rather helpful to see some examples of film presentations of other projects of the CVOHIKempen – GPB to be inspired for our planned film.
The CVOHIKempen – GPB opened the doors for more than 1000 current and future students on this day to have a barbecue together. This well-organized event is important for the school to inform and motivate adults of the region to take part in the offered evening courses.
In the afternoon we visited the Jenevermuseum in Hasselt. Gerard Gielen, a language teacher at the CVOHIKempen – GPB, showed us his home town. The final meeting of the partners took place in a restaurant where we enjoyed the culinary specialities of Flanders.

Sunday, 3rd June 2007

The guests departed in the early morning.

We want to say thank you to our Belgium partners for this well-organized event. Seen from any point of view it was on a very high level. We hope to meet you again and want to invite you to visit our countries and institutions as well.

Wspomnienia z Geel, Flandria

Po raz kolejny dzięki projektowi steLLLa miałam okazję odwiedzić Geel i uczestniczyć w doskonale przygotowanym spotkaniu poświęconym videokonferencji i reklamie projektu. Podczas spotkania omawialiśmy rożne sposoby organizacji videokonferencji, testowaliśmy, który program będzie odpowiedni dla naszego projektu. Staraliśmy się ustalić jak będą wyglądały przyszłe ulotki, plakat i film reklamujący nasz projekt.

Gospodarze w ramach promowania CVO HIKempen i projektu stellla zorganizowali spotkanie, na którym zaproszeni goście prezentowali zagadnienia związane z e-learningiem. Ponad 100 osób przyszło na spotkanie i uczestniczyło w przyjęciu.

Kolejnego dnia zwiedzaliśmy miasto uniwersytecki Leuven, a wieczorem wszyscy partnerzy gotowali wspólną kolację.
